Day 3 - The China Challenge

originally written: Tuesday, November 10. 2009

(Dear Mr. Rooster)

Today a student called me over to her desk. When I got there she said that she wanted to tell me something but was too shy to say it out loud. Instead, she showed me something written on a piece of paper. I read the note in her hands and here's what it said:

Your smile makes the room bright, your happiness makes the students feel wonderful.

I have the loveliest students.

In the spirit of giving compliments, below is a letter I've written to the rooster who lives outside my window:

Dear Mr. Rooster,

You may not know me, but oh, I know you. You sit on your high perch day in and day out, crowing until the cows come home. Of course, in China where cows are few and far between, you crow ceaselessly. I must admit, I am not your biggest fan. Not at 2 in the afternoon when you cock-a-doodle-doo me out of a peaceful nap, not at 7 in the evening when your voice provocatively calls me away from lesson planning and certainly not at 3 in the morning when you jolt me out of a sleep cycle only to serenade me with your shrieking. The impression that you've left on me has been far from favorable.
I had imagined that I would continue to despise you - your impeccably inappropriate timing and your shrill, unforgiving call to insanity. But then today, Mr. Rooster, you redeemed yourself. Though I set my alarm as usual, my tired body played joker this morning and turned off the alarm while my mind was still sleeping. Had it not been for your 6:20am call to duty, I would have slept through my second day at work. So in short, I'd like to say thank you for your often ill-timed and unmannerly presence outside my window. Though I'm likely to continue cursing you under my breath, your not really so bad.

Sincerely,
That girl inside the window
